The Cameron Highlands region is quite large and there are several places that you can stay. We recommend staying in the town of Tanah Rata as there is lots of great places to stay, plenty of restaurants and you have easy access to all of the interesting places in Cameron Highlands.

To visit most of the cool places here, you will need some form of transport. You have several options to explore the area including taxis, renting a scooter and taking the bus.
Our top pick for getting around is to rent a scooter and drive yourself. This gives you the freedom to make your own adventure and it is much cheaper than a taxi. The only drawback to renting a scooter is that you cannot go on any gravel roads, and the road to the popular Mossy Forest is a gravel road. We were told that they use GPS to track your movements and that they would keep the entire deposit if we did drive out to Mossy Forest.
There are also some busses you can take, but these stay on the main roads. Cameron Highlands is a destination that you can visit year round. The monsoon season runs from November to January so this time of year tends to see a lot of rain. It still remains a popular time to visit as this is also when the temperature is the lowest. February to April usually tends to be the driest months, making it a good time to visit as well.
The region is popular with local tourists, especially on weekends and holidays. If possible, visit here during the week to avoid the crowds. We recommend spending 2 or 3 nights here to get out and explore the hill country. This should be enough time to enjoy all of the top Cameron Highlands attractions. For us, the highlight of our time here was spent amongst the tea fields and exploring the beautiful scenery on offer. All of the different farms and markets, while quite touristy, are still worth visiting. Tea plantations are in no short supply here. There are more than enough facilities for tourists. Most Malaysian tourists do everything in groups and participate in organized tours. Very different from the activities we undertake: hiking in the jungle without a guide and exploring on a scooter the highlands of the Cameron Highlands ourselves.
We stay three nights in the Cameron Highlands. There is more than enough to do and we travel at a leisurely pace. However, if you have less time, then two nights is certainly enough time to discover the highlights of this place. You can do the following activities for the most part in two full days, but it is based on a three-night stay in the Cameron Highlands.
The Cameron Highlands are spread over an area as large as Singapore. However, most activities can be done in a small area around the three cities of Ringlet , Tanah Rata and Brinchang. Of these three, I prefer Tanah Rata because most of the hikes start from here and you have the best facilities here too including the bus terminal. Tanah Rata really has more atmosphere and lively vibe than the other two villages. Keep in mind, all three villages are not necessarily beautiful, you are really here for the area.
We stayed in Tanah Rata ourselves and I can certainly recommend this location to you too. You will find many hotels in Tanah Rata, but not all hotels are equally good. One of the nicest hostels we have ever slept in! With a movie room, cosy public areas and a nice kitchen to prepare your own food. Since the beds have curtains, there is a lot of privacy and each bed has two sockets, a fan and a large locker to put your bags in.

This guesthouse is just outside the centre of Tanah Rata, about a minute walk , but has a nice view of the hills and nice double rooms. You might even manage to catch a glimpse of the rare and pungent rafflesia flower, which can grow over a meter in diameter and weigh up to 10 kilograms! The trail comes to a watchtower that offers views overlooking the misty highlands.
Do note that road conditions to get to the Mossy Forest are rough, so unless you have rented a 4WD vehicle, we recommend joining a local tour to get there. Journey back to Brinchang town to replenish your energy and warm yourself up with a delightful pot of hot tea at the Jim Thompson Tea Room. Interestingly, this temple is the largest religious structure in Cameron Highlands. Free to enter, it is a place of tranquility where you can admire opulent statues and offer prayers at the altar. Sit by the koi pond to enjoy a lovely afternoon in silent meditation.

Having a car allows you to bypass much of this, mainly in terms of where you stay; if not, you will need to depend on taxis or be comfortable walking very long distances in order to make your way through this beautiful, but imperfect place. Is the Cameron Highlands worth visiting? Yes, but there are definitely some caveats that could make you feel differently.
