Clutch-based pencils are activated by pressing the eraser, which opens the jaws inside the tips and allows the lead to drop from the barrels.
Finally, ratchet-based pencils hold the lead in place with a few small jaws inside a ring at the tip. The jaws are controlled by a button that causes them to separate and allows the lead to come through.
