My father was placed under the Imperius Curse by my master. Now my father was the one imprisoned, controlled. Leaving him unable to ever fully learn his assistant's name, after stress from the World Cup was over. I noticed he called Percy Weatherby and figured it portrayed him as the kind of person who would not bother to remember his devoted assistant's name, and never bother to wonder if he is related to Arthur. Moments later, that seemed perfectly consistent with calling Arthur by his first name, not out of true intimacy, but rather the kind of fake familiarity people use to insinuate themselves into a group in which they do not truly belong.
Personally I thought at the time that it was because Percy wanted to move forward with his career without having the name Weasley attached to him. To me that explained why Percy is absent and takes a different view than that of his Family for the middle novels.
Percy swallowed. He agrees that he was family disowning, thereby wanting to distance himself from the other Weasley's, given his fathers treatment by the ministry. Sign up to join this community. Apparently, people named Karen are often called Laura, and vice versa. Compared to that, saying Weatherby instead of Weasley is almost not even a mistake. I've never worked with high profile politicians, but I do work with professors at an R1 university that often make this mistake with names of people they should know for one reason or another. No lie: I've heard this explained as a logical allocation of mental resources. That is, they intentionally don't remember people's names so they can spend energy focusing on other matters in the conversation.
Of course I've also met professors in the same department that make a point to learn everyone's name, so this is really a case-by-case thing. My first thought was Imperious related senility but that's not possible because Jr. It's not like it's a conscious choice to not remember someone's name, it's a lack of a conscious choice to remember their name - because they don't naturally have the ability to remember names, it takes enough effort that they would literally miss the next part of the conversation, and heaven forbid there are two new people to remember.
This excuse falls flat with repeated contact, eventually names sink in unless you just want to make others feel unimportant. The news that it was going to be revived, with a new rule ensuring that champions had to be of age before they could compete, had been fantastically received and had been the talk of the Wizarding World until those pesky Death Eaters had caused a bit of a stir at the World Cup.
Who better to run a difficult gauntlet of scary and deadly tasks than a bunch of barely legal, or in the case of Harry Potter, definitely not legal, children? The cream of the crop, the best in their schools.
The competition had been brilliant so far. The first task had been excellently entertaining and all of the champions had given it their best go. He was well on track to winning the thing, and Ludo had doubled his bet on him. It would be even better for Bagman if the Potter boy succeeded, and if he could be linked to that success, then maybe Ludo could claim back some of his old fame and then the money would definitely start rolling in.
Ludo raised his head to the sky as the sun started to appear along the horizon. He rubbed a hand along his jaw, grimacing at the rasp of stubble. Despite his increasing years and increasing body size, he still tried his best to look presentable. He was a public figure after all.
He hiked his trousers back up and let out a heavy sigh. It put the whole operation at risk. He was about to turn to head back up the castle when a surge of ice-cold water crashed over his feet, causing him to yelp in shock. He turned back to the lake, his eyes trying to make out shapes in the slowly growing daylight. He was, he decided there and then, getting far too old for this shit. He watched as a long spear broke the surface first, the wood decorated with algae and duckweed, and felt his shoulders droop.
It was about bloody time. After the longest night spent waiting, Ludo retook his seat on the driftwood and steeled himself; now the real work had to begin. It was a sense of resignation that had prompted the acceptance, necessity rather than preference, but it meant that he stopped trying to hold back on it when he finally got what he wanted. The job at the Ministry. The Department of International Magical Cooperation.
It meant that he did everything he could to adjust his clothes, his manner, adhered to the rules and their structure ever more strictly as he learned more about them. The law was the law was the law. Percy was going to make something of himself. It could mean distinction, a way to make more of himself, a way to help his family. One day, it would be different. He was going to work hard, and people were going to notice the name of Weasley and respect it again.
They were going to look at his family and see them for who they were, not what they made. A lot could spin plans like his around without warning. The Quidditch World Cup, where Percy had come away with a bloodied nose and a red face on hearing the name Weatherby. He was the ideal scapegoat. You should have noticed Mr Crouch was acting strangely and informed a superior, Weasley. Then the promotion came through.
Junior Assistant to the Minister of Magic himself. The conversation with his parents proved that they thought something very different, and it had stung badly. It was the final straw, and that meant that Percy exploded and said the unforgivable. Percy had moved out. His wage had improved, but not enough to afford somewhere on his own for long. Oliver Wood. Signed by Puddlemere United and if possible, even more Quidditch obsessed than the brothers and sister he no longer acknowledged.
He knew himself to be a coward. He went to practice, he went to the pub or out, at least, Percy assumed. Percy would find Oliver asleep on the sofa in the living room when he came down in the morning, unshaven and still dressed. He came back at odd hours of the night and woke Percy up, leaving him aggravated. He said nothing. He had his ambition, and he was alone. Except that unwittingly, Percy did care. He cared about what was happening, about watching the bright light that had once been in Oliver starting to dim, about the shadows beginning to appear beneath his eyes.
So he did what he could. Blankets over an asleep form on the couch. Medicines surreptitiously restocked in the cabinet. Meals cooked his mum had taught him, another painful pang that struck every time he so much as used a pan and leftovers put in boxes without a word.
And every now and then, when he could get away with it, a healing spell, done far too gently for it to mean anything but concern. Eventually, Oliver had confronted him on it. Of course he had. Oliver had never ran away from anything in his life. Percy had met his gaze. Because Oliver Wood was looking suspiciously like a member of the Order of the Phoenix instead of only being an extremely gifted Quidditch player, and Percy Weasley wanted to keep his boundaries in place.
If Percy had done another thing that was unthinkable and begun to fall in love with Oliver while he was at it, no one needed to know that either. A few years could be a lifetime lived. Now the world was at war, and nothing would ever be the same. The oak front doors opened, and everyone turned to look as the Durmstrang students entered with Professor Karkaroff. Krum was at the front of the party, accompanied by a pretty girl in blue robes Harry didn't know. Over their heads, he saw that an area of lawn right in front of the castle had been transformed into a sort of grotto full of fairy lights — meaning hundreds of actual living fairies were sitting in the rosebushes that had been conjured there, and fluttering over the statues of what seemed to be Father Christmas and his reindeer.
Mel smiled at the sight of her friend, she turned to see the boy's reaction, but they didn't recognize her, she rolled her eyes. Of course, they were that oblivious Mel slapped the boy's hands away from his cuffs one last time.
Ron complained, rubbing his face on the exact place she'd kissed. Mel stuck out her tongue and laughed, happily letting Harry guide her toward the rest of the champions.
The woman's eyes examined her robes and then Harry's, she thought it could've been a trick of the light, but it looked like McGonagall had almost smiled.
There you are! Good evening Miss Greengrass if you can join the line as well, at the top, please. Mel can't be there, she's Potter's partner Erick's head turned fast when he heard that, abandoning any kind of discretion. Mel looked away, managing to witness the moment Harry realized Krum's partner was Hermione, his eyes widened in a way Mel found hilarious.
The girls chatted for a while until the doors to the Great Hall opened, Mel was happy that Hermione could have such a lovely moment, some girls looked at her like she was their worst nightmare or a very inconvenient rock in their shoe, but Hermione paid no mind to it as she engaged in a quiet talk with Krum. When Ron walked past he didn't look at her, Mel wondered if it was because he still couldn't recognize her or he was upset because she hadn't mentioned her partner was Krum.
When the champions -plus Erick and Daphne as the committee- made their entrance, everyone inside the Hall applauded and cheered. They sat on the front of the Hall where there was a large table that they shared with the judges and teachers. If there was a moment where Mel had felt like a real princess, that was it. She walked through the tables and the silvery ornamentation surrounding them in awe.
In her state, she pulled Harry closer and intertwined their fingers, skipping with every step she took. It's like we're inside of a fairytale! I haven't stopped thinking about it, everyone looks like royalty! So pretty! Percy Weasley was looking as if the ball had been organized solely for him.
The older Weasley pulled out the chair next to him and Harry politely obliged, before sitting down he pulled the chair on his left and waited until Mel sat down, she was highly tempted to tease him about it, but at the same time she was too delighted to break the charm of it. Hasn't been right since the World Cup. Hardly surprising — overwork.
He's not as young as he was — though still quite brilliant, of course, the mind remains as great as it ever was. But the World Cup was a fiasco for the whole Ministry, and then, Mr Crouch suffered a huge personal shock with the misbehaviour of that house-elf of his, Blinky, or whatever she was called. Naturally, he dismissed her immediately afterwards, but — well, as I say, he's getting on, he needs looking after, and I think he's found a definite drop in his home comforts since she left.
And then we had the tournament to arrange, and the aftermath of the Cup to deal with — that revolting Skeeter woman buzzing around — no, poor man, he's having a well earned, quiet Christmas. I'm just glad he knew he had someone he could rely upon to take his place.
He said all that quickly and proudly, Mel agreed with him about how everyone needed a break from time to time and decided to throw some comments about Skeeter as well but said nothing about Winky. Harry lifted the menu in front of him and pretended to read it only to whisper:.
Mel giggled and picked up her menu, there was a large variety of food but she didn't know how to order it. Dumbledore leaned down over his plate and said in a clear voice: "Pork chops! Daphne Greengrass sat beside her, from what she heard, she seemed to be having a good time. Daphne didn't sound as stuck-up and rude as the other Slytherin girls from Mel's year.
She sounded quite likeable. Shame that she couldn't befriend her even if she wanted to A few seats to their right were Hermione and Krum, and he was talking like he'd never talked before in his life. But ve have grounds larger even than these — though in vinter, ve have very little daylight, so ve are not enjoying them. But in summer ve are flying every day, over the lakes and the mountains —".
Do we not jealously guard the halls of learning that have been entrusted to us? Are we not right to be proud that we alone know our school's secrets, and right to protect them? Only this morning, for instance, I took a wrong turning on the way to the bathroom and found myself in a beautifully proportioned room I have never seen before, containing a really rather magnificent collection of chamber pots. When I went back to investigate more closely, I discovered that the room had vanished.
But I must keep an eye out for it. Possibly it is only accessible at five-thirty in the morning. Or it may only appear at the quarter moon — or when the seeker has an exceptionally full bladder. Dumbledore gave them a little wink before turning back to his conversation.
Zey do not melt, of course And ze food is seemply superb. And we 'ave choirs of wood nymphs, 'oo serenade us as we eat. We 'ave none of zis ugly armor in ze 'alls, and eef a poltergeist ever entaired into Beauxbatons, 'e would be expelled like zat. She saw the man waving animatedly to Madame Maxime, who waved back in a more neutral manner. Her gaze wandered around and found Ron throwing daggers with his eyes at Hermione, it appeared that he'd finally decided to notice her.
Meanwhile, Hermione was too distracted, as she was now teaching Krum to say her name. I was relieved, Lavender told me he was there to ask me, I'm glad that wasn't true. When all the food had been consumed, Dumbledore stood up and asked the students to do the same. Then, with a wave of his wand, all the tables zoomed back along the walls leaving the floor clear, and then he conjured a raised platform into existence along the right wall.
A set of drums, several guitars, a lute, a cello, and some bagpipes were set upon it. The Weird Sisters now trooped up onto the stage to wildly enthusiastic applause; they were all extremely hairy and dressed in black robes that had been artfully ripped and torn.
They picked up their instruments, and Harry, who had been so interested in watching them that he had almost forgotten what was coming, suddenly realized that the lanterns on all the other tables had gone out and that the other champions and their partners were standing up. Both kids followed the older champions to the dance floor, Mel caught Erick's eye and he smiled at her in quite the friendly manner, he showed her a thumbs up as a way of encouragement.
She appreciated that he wasn't trying to tease her, nervous as she was. Before they had more time to overthink, the band started a slow, gloomy song. Mel and Harry took their places and started to dance as best as they could. It was easy, she wasn't sure if it was her or Harry the one guiding their movements, she couldn't bring herself to care. Soon enough several students joined in as well as the teachers, Mel and Harry engaged in small talk as they spun around the dance floor. She liked the way he said it like he was planning to dance more than one song The twins were dancing too, their dates were cackling at the exaggerated way they were moving across the room, several couples even had to move away to avoid crashing against them.
Harry and Mel grinned at the sight. Yeah— I said no because he said you didn't have a partner and I wanted to ask you. Even if it were true, I'm not the type to date someone just because they fancy me, I'm supposed to like them back, you know? They were still dancing, but their steps were slowing down, it was like the giddiness from moments ago had been suddenly taken away.
Ron wasn't going to be helpful at the moment for any of them though, he was busy glaring at Hermione. Mel was determined to have a good evening, so she got up and walked over to where the food was. Erick snuck up to stand beside her and start a conversation. Haven't seen her, but she was quite good-looking— Why, are you jealous? I came with my crush," Mel replied bitterly, "even if he insists that I turned down a bunch of other boys so he wouldn't feel sad. Mel felt very flattered, but she was still upset about her fight with Harry, so she kept pressing his buttons.
Well, so are the Greengrass. Daphne and I always stick together so we don't bore to death I have to keep a low profile for at least three more years. Without my parents' support, I'd have no house and wealth, I need them to like me a little so they don't kick me out. I couldn't hate you if I tried Don't make me repeat it, I'll deny I ever said it if you bring that up in the future. He's competing against Harry! Against Hogwarts!
You — you're —" Ron was losing his mind, "fraternizing with the enemy, that's what you're doing! The enemy!
Honestly — who was the one who was all excited when they saw him arrive? Who was the one who wanted his autograph? Who's got a model of him up in their dormitory? If you really want to know, he — he said he'd been coming up to the library every day to try and talk to me, but he hadn't been able to pluck up the courage!
He's Karkaroff's student, isn't he? He knows who you hang around with He's just trying to get closer to Harry — get inside information on him — or get near enough to jinx him —". That's exactly what you said about Erick! And look how that turned out! I suppose you've been putting your heads together during those cosy little library sessions —" Ron made a face. How could you say something like that — I want Harry to win the tournament, Harry knows that, don't you, Harry?
Mel wanted to smash an empty bottle over his head. Harry's attitude was cut short and he stared at her like she'd just told him magic wasn't real, it reminded her of a hurt puppy, which only made her angrier.
I was hoping she'd be able to have a decent night For some reason the sight made Mel's heart soften, causing a lump on her throat. That's the whole point, you know — international magical cooperation!
Very enthusiastic A little overenthusiastic, if truth be told It was May 24th; precisely one month before the third task, and that evening at 9pm the champions were supposed to gather to be informed of the details of the task.
Of course, Harry already had a vague understanding of what the task would involve, mostly thanks to Barty. Harry was instructed by Professor McGonagall to go to the Quidditch Pitch at 9pm, and he came across Cedric as he made his way out there.
Harry nodded his head back and kept on walking. Apparently the older boy was in the mood for small-talk. They reached the large stands of the pitch and made their way through, past the locker rooms and out onto the field. Instead of the smooth pristine lawn that was usually there, rows upon rows of small hedges appeared to have been planted. Harry had been expecting this, but he still grimaced at the sight.
Cedric looked affronted. The two were spotted by Ludo Bagman who was standing a bit further ahead with Fleur and Krum beside him. There you two are! Come on now, let's get this show on the road!
Now don't you worry, your pitch will be returned to its original condition when the tournament is over. What you see here now is what will soon become a magical maze! It will be the task of you four young wizards and witch to make your way through the maze to the center! Whoever reaches the center first gets full points! Each subsequent champion will be scored based on the time it took them to complete the task, as well as the magical techniques they used to defeat the challenges they met along the way!
Now, do we have any questions? Harry was making his way away from the pitch some twenty minutes later. Bagman was an overeager windbag and he had spent far too long describing something that was fairly simple. They weren't going to tell the champions anything specific about the task, just that there was a maze and that there would be scary dangerous shit inside it.
How that had taken more than twenty minutes to explain was beyond him. Harry didn't usually visit the manor this late at night simply because he usually didn't have any good excuses to slip out of the castle this late, but since he was already outside the castle wards he didn't see any reason not to take advantage of the opportunity that had been provided to him and was now making his way towards the edge of the forest so he could disappear from sight before 'disappearing' from the school.
He was just about to activate the portkey when he heard some strange muttering coming from a bit further within the tree line. He pulled out his cypress wand and began cautiously making his way inside the forest. He came up short when he saw an extremely ragged and ill looking Mr. Crouch standing there and muttering incoherently to a tree. Harry blinked at the man, wondering if he were imagining things. How the hell did the man get there?
He was supposed to be locked up in one of the holding cells in the basement of the manor! Crouch continued to speak to the tree as if he were talking to someone else.
It appeared that he thought the tree was someone named Weatherby, and Harry vaguely remembered Crouch Sr. He stood there, listening in, trying to make sense of the ramblings for a moment longer. Crouch seemed to be under the illusion that he was speaking to someone about his son, but in his mind, Barty had only just graduated from Hogwarts. This time it seemed to jerk Crouch Sr. You have to g-get Dumbledore I have to warn him. Have to tell him. It's all my fault. I never should have Harry rolled his eyes in annoyance.
How did you get to Hogwarts? Did you apparate here? It's all my f-fault. Had to warn th-them. Fat little man I st-stole his port-key. I have to w-warn Dumbledore! Harry refocused on the sniveling Mr. This was because his warnings about Voldemort getting stronger were not taken seriously as he was in a delusional state at the time and the Wizarding community and Ministry had both lost already trust in him due to the fact that he put his Ministry career before his own son's welfare, which at the time had resulted in him sentencing his son to life imprisonment in Azkaban.
This loss of trust for Crouch along with the lack of physical evidence of Voldemort's return indirectly caused the Ministry, encouraged by Cornelius Fudge due to his paranoia and refusal to accept Voldemort's return, to launch a smear campaign against Dumbledore and Harry Potter believing they were all lying about Voldemort's return, [4] and proved to be one of the major factors to Voldemort eventually seizing control of the Ministry a few years after his return.
However, this still didn't do much to improve Crouch's legacy as the community still lost trust and respect for Crouch due to Crouch helping his son escape from Azkaban and consequently sealing a path for Voldemort's return, contrary to him imprisoning his son earlier to protect his career.
Even though Crouch's popularity and legacy was largely tainted with the wizarding community by then, some of Crouch's misguided policies were adopted by the Ministry when Rufus Scrimgeour succeeded Fudge as Minister for Magic since he allowed the arrest of innocent people like Stanley Shunpike just for making boastful claims of knowing Voldemort's plans, similar to what Crouch had done throughout his career.
This was one of the reasons why Harry Potter refused Scrimgeour's attempt to recruit him into the Ministry to serve as a "mascot" to raise public morale and claim that the Ministry was winning against Voldemort, despite the contrary, with Harry pointing out that Scrimgeour and the Ministry had learnt nothing from either Crouch or Fudge's mistakes.
However, while Crouch's plight played a major role in Voldemort's return and eventual rise to power in the Ministry due to the Ministry denying his return to power, his act in attempting to warn Dumbledore of Voldemort's rising power and alerting Harry Potter to it before his death also inspired Dumbledore to reinstate the Order of the Phoenix to help fight against Voldemort. This was down to the fact that Dumbledore knew that Voldemort would eventually return to power, his empathy towards Crouch's family history and other evidence of Voldemort's rising power due to the surrounding disappearances of Bertha Jorkins , Frank Bryce and Crouch himself.
Dumbledore also realised that he could not afford to let Voldemort influence and tear apart other families the way the Crouch family had been influenced and destroyed and was able to take Crouch's claims that Voldemort was getting stronger seriously due to this and his empathy and trust for Crouch.
Even others like Sirius Black and Harry Potter were able to take Crouch's claims seriously and eventually fight against Voldemort when he returned to power, despite Sirius having a huge grudge against Crouch for imprisoning him in Azkaban without a trial, and Harry being shocked at some of Crouch's actions. This was especially important for Harry as he was the chosen one destined to defeat Voldemort which he ultimately succeeded in doing after destroying all of Voldemort's Horcruxes.
Thus in a way, despite the critical fall in popularity and trust for Crouch within the wizarding community, Crouch's actions and legacy left both a negative and positive influence on the wizarding community after Voldemort's return as they helped shape both Voldemort's return to power and his ultimate defeat.
The only one who truly mourned for Crouch's demise was Winky, who was horrified when she heard of it from his son. Winky sank into further depression, her alcoholism on Butterbeer led on for years before finally ceasing though she never truly recovered from it. Barty Snr's death led to his son being the last living heir of the Crouch family, and Barty Jnr was eventually exposed, leading to him suffering the Dementor's Kiss. Crouch had short grey hair with a neat parting, which was described as " almost unnaturally straight " and a narrow toothbrush moustache.
In certain lights, such as in semi-darkness, he took on a skull-like appearance. While disguised as a Muggle for the Quidditch World Cup , he wore a black suit and highly polished shoes, making him look like a Muggle businessman, to the point that Harry Potter described that even Vernon Dursley would not be able to tell the difference.
However, Crouch's appearance suffered after Voldemort put him under the Imperius Curse. When he appeared in Hogwarts for the choosing for the Triwizard Champions, Harry noted after seeing Crouch up close that he appeared ill with a papery look in his skin and dark shadows under his eyes, to the point that he partially agreed with the rumours that Crouch was ill until he eventually learnt the truth after Crouch Jnr was recaptured. After he fought the Imperius Curse and escaped from Voldemort's control, Crouch became almost unrecognisable in his final moments, sporting a weak, dishevelled and unshaven appearance with overgrown hair and ragged clothes due to the effort of fighting the Imperius Curse and travelling for many days between his house and Hogwarts before he was murdered by his son.
Crouch spoke in a curt voice, [21] and seemed to be an overly serious person in contrast to his peers and colleagues: he did not smile or wave when his name was announced in the introduction to the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry , whereas Ludo Bagman , Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports , waved jovially and enthusiastically, though this probably had something to do with the Imperius curse he was under. Having devoted his entire life to eradicating the dark forces, Crouch was well known for despising the Dark Arts and those who practised them, but the methods he used were just as brutal and cruel as those he worked to prosecute.
He legalised the usages of the Unforgivable Curses and went under the principles of kill rather than capture, shoot first and ask questions later. Crouch would unethically imprison many people, including Sirius Black, without trials. To this end, he disregarded true justice for no good reason other than to make himself look good in the public's eyes, so as to further his own career and work his way up to becoming the Minister for Magic.
If anything even looked like it might destroy his reputation, he would make it his first priority to remove it, even to the point of publicly disowning and imprisoning his son in order to make it clear that he had nothing to do with anyone who was even remotely suspected of being connected to the Dark Arts.
He would later dismiss his devoted house-elf just for being at the wrong place at the wrong time though the true reason is he deemed her unreliable since she had almost let his subjugated son get away. In order to make progress, he even accepted a plea bargain with Death Eater Igor Karkaroff , granting him pardon in exchange for the names of other Death Eaters.
Despite his ruthlessness and apparent selfishness, he was not completely unreasonable, as he was capable of feeling true love, since he agreed to his wife's dying request of saving their son from prison, despite his high position, reputation and general dislike for the Dark Arts and was willing to use the son, breaking the rules to restrain his son, breaking the laws he was so adamant in enforcing.
He was willing to listen to Winky's persuasion of letting Barty Jnr to see the Quidditch World Cup for a taste of freedom and fresh air, though it did take her many months of effort to achieve this.
In this sense, he was more of a hypocrite than anyone but Sirius could have imagined. The reason he was seen as an unloving workaholic was due to him placing his public image and career over his family, having set his entire life into following rules and eradicating dark forces and would spend little to no time on his family life.
Indeed, Sirius found it extremely weird when Crouch was calling in sick, as the Barty he and the public knew would never miss a day of work for any simple reason such as sickness.
This tough love for his family made his own son see it as neglect, leaving a negative impact on the young man's perception and choices. Crouch's rule-abiding, ruthless, selfish and neglectful nature however ultimately turned out to be his undoing, especially after losing his popularity in the Wizarding World and keeping his son under the Imperius Curse for years to fulfil his wife's wish and to prevent him rejoining Voldemort's service.
After Voldemort freed his son from the Imperius Curse Crouch put on him, Crouch's sanity was damaged by the Imperius Curse Voldemort put on him, leaving him in a delusional and weakened state after he managed to fight the Imperius Curse, and resulted in his death at the hands of his own son. While he became delusional to the point that he was at times unaware of his point in time, his location and mistook a tree for Percy Weasley, in one of his sane moments, he expressed remorse over his mistakes and attempted to warn Dumbledore by telling Harry Potter about Voldemort's rising power.
This demonstrated that in spite of his ruthlessness and hypocrisy, his ability to feel true love meant that he was still capable of realising and admitting his own faults. Bartemius Crouch Senior was noted by Sirius Black to be a great wizard , magically powerful, and his accomplishments and skills have once made him very close to achieving the position of Minister for Magic.
Bartemius Crouch Junior , his estranged son and killer. Bartemius did not pay enough attention to his son , until the day Crouch Jnr was caught in the company of three Death Eaters after the torture of Alice and Frank Longbottom. Crouch Snr gave his son little more than the courtesy of a trial, something he did not always give other suspects and oversaw it personally.
In the end, Crouch Snr simply used the trial as nothing but a sham to publicly disown his son and showed no mercy as he sent him to Azkaban. However, he fulfilled his wife's dying wish and smuggled their son back out, keeping him hidden at home under the Imperius Curse for several years.
This, plus Crouch Snr's neglect of his son proved to be his undoing, as Lord Voldemort learned of the whereabouts of his servant and freed him, turning the tables on Crouch Snr by Imperiusing him instead. Although Crouch eventually escaped, he was murdered by his own son when he attempted to warn Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore of what had happened. His son felt like Barty Snr loved his wife more than he had ever loved his son, but this was only the truth in the son's eyes and not necessarily the accurate truth.
However, Barty Snr seemed to put his public image first, as despite his son's pleas, he still sentenced him to Azkaban for life. Dumbledore lets on there was generally some doubt if Barty Jnr had been guilty or just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but this was only Dumbledore's point of view while he may not have known all the evidence.
However, the love for his wife and son allowed Barty Snr to be persuaded by her dying wish to smuggle their son out of prison, in exchange of her. All of Crouch Snr's neglect of his son and ruthlessness as a Ministry official to imprison his own son brought a negative impact on Crouch Jnr's psyche, leading the boy to genuinely despise his father enough to kill him.
Barty Jnr would later comment that Crouch Snr was disappointing as a father, that he suffered the indignity of being named after that father and that he greatly enjoyed killing his father. Before Crouch Snr died, he blamed himself for what his son had become, as it was his neglect which led to Crouch Jnr joining forces with Voldemort and turning against his father. Winky the house-elf was an extremely devoted servant of Barty Crouch Snr.
She was very willing to help her master take care of his renegade son and even obeyed his orders to stay on the Quidditch World Cup 's top box, despite her acrophobia. Her loyalty may have surpassed the mere magic-bound duty of an average house-elf, as she showed genuine affection for Barty even long after her dismissal.
Barty, in turn, entrusted Winky with the importance of guarding and caring for his son. Although he respected her to grant her requests to reward Junior for good behaviours, such as letting him go to the Quidditch World Cup with months of persuasion , he also expected her to follow her duties without fail, regardless of her acrophobia.
When she failed to restrain Barty Jnr, Barty Snr lost all his respect and trust in her and publicly dismissed her, treating her as nothing more than "something filthy and rotten contaminating his over-shined shoes" when she was screaming and begging for mercy at his feet. Winky was devastated by this dismissal, considered it a disgrace to her mother and grandmother and this devastation worsened when she heard that Crouch was murdered by his own son.
Being the only one who truly mourned Crouch Snr's death, her devastation over her dismissal and Crouch's death resulted in a Butterbeer addiction which even though it later reduced she never fully overcame. Percy Weasley , one of his colleagues and biggest admirers. Percy Weasley worked under Crouch for thirteen months and was absolutely obsessed with him: indeed, Percy's brother Ronald joked in August of that he should be expecting their engagement any day.
Percy's admiration of Crouch was so strong that he defended Crouch when his brothers mocked him and when Crouch sacked Winky , putting his friendship with Hermione Granger under strain when she condemned Crouch's seemingly unreasonable act. After Voldemort subjugated Crouch and forced him to write letters to declare sickness, Weasley obeyed the orders via these letters unquestioningly. This eventually got Percy into trouble, as when Crouch escaped and was seen delirious on Hogwarts ground, the Ministry accused Percy of being irresponsible and unperceptive, that he should have seen the written orders as potential forgeries and that he should have informed a superior of Crouch's questionable status.
It is unknown what Percy thought of Crouch after the man had been found insane in the Forbidden Forest and participated in breaking out his criminal son from Azkaban, and it is unknown how Percy reacted when learning of his death. Crouch also indirectly proved to be a major factor for Percy's huge loyalty to the Ministry and his temporary estrangement from his own family, especially as his twin brothers Fred and George Weasley started teasing him more and his younger brother Ron stopped trusting him after learning of Crouch's son.
Additionally, the trouble Percy got into over Crouch's disappearance only made him more ambitious to the point that he accepted the post of Junior Assistant to the Minister for Magic under Fudge without question, and put his Ministry career before his own family when Voldemort returned to full power, just as Crouch had done.
Little is known of Crouch's relation toward Jorkins, although after her disappearance he spent some time convincing co-worker Ludovic Bagman to send someone out to look for her. While this was done to prevent Jorkins from exposing his secret, Crouch was remorseful over this act and her death, blaming himself for her fate. Ludovic Bagman , his Ministry colleague.
Barty had a rather negative relationship with Ludo Bagman , who was a polar contrast in personality with Crouch himself. Crouch himself was serious and strictly adhered to rules, while Bagman took everything lightly and disregard rules from time to time. To this end, Crouch once tried to have Bagman sentenced to Azkaban for unwittingly giving information to Death Eaters despite the circumstances and was infuriated when the entire court voted for Bagman's acquittal.
Nonetheless, Crouch referred to him using the nickname "Ludo", instead of his full name "Ludovic" or the even more formal use of his surname. Albus Dumbledore , who both disapproved and respected his actions. Albus Dumbledore had a mixed relationship with Crouch, as he was relatively civil with him but disapproved of his methods, especially during the First Wizarding War when Crouch was the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and attempted to become Minister of Magic.
