Now, Craig Nehring, a purveyor of the paranormal, is making a more earthly claim — cue the spooky music — that flesh and blood humans intentionally burned the mansion to the ground 29 years ago. And not just any humans, but rather Land O' Lakes Town Board members at the time, the fire department and law enforcement officers.
Their supposed motive? They were tired of all the vandals and kids partying at the vacant mansion. Summerwind , on the shore of West Bay Lake in Vilas County, likely was hit by lightning and destroyed by fire on June 19, That's long been the accepted explanation.
Just in time for a columnist in need of a Halloween story, Nehring now is sharing the account of a man, the nephew of a Summerwind neighbor, who claims he was present that night and saw the century-old place torched. Nehring of Green Bay is founder of Fox Valley Ghost Hunters , which hosts scary events at what's left of the mansion, basically the foundation, chimneys and concrete steps.
He is also with the Summerwind Restoration Society , which hopes to rebuild the house as it was and run it as a bed and breakfast. They are hundreds of thousands of dollars short of the money needed to do this.
I had to tread carefully when I contacted Ronald Ramesh, who was on the Town Board back in those days. I didn't want to make it sound like I was accusing him of being an arsonist and a liar all these years later. But he didn't seem the least bit upset by my call. I was town chairman then, but, no, we had nothing to do with that at all. Some music for this commentary came Podington Bear.
