Viking homes have been found in nearly all parts of Denmark. Only a small proportion of the Vikings lived in towns. Most of them were farmers, who lived in small villages consisting of farms. For them the farm, domestic animals and agriculture were all pivotal to the daily routine. The day started when the cock crowed at dawn. Most Vikings lived on a farm, which was often bounded by a fence.
The farm was centred around a dwelling house — the longhouse — which was the main building. Apart from the dwelling house, the farm often consisted of various areas of activity and other buildings, including outbuildings, barns, stables and workshops. Viking houses were built of wood.
The longhouses had bowed walls in plan, forming a ship-like outline. The walls were lined with clay or consisted of wooden planks placed vertically into the ground, which supported the roof, along with two rows of internal posts. Outside the house was often supported by sloping posts. Gradually, these centers, where traders from all over Europe, Russia and the Middle East would come, grew into towns. In these towns, and others in Europe and Russia, Vikings began to specialize in the arts, crafts, metalworking, pottery etc.
Besides raiding and farming, Vikings were exceptional craftsmen. Shipbuilders built not only the dreaded dragon ships, but also knarrs, ocean-going merchant ships, and a variety of other specialized boats. Jewelers, bronze-casters, antler carvers and bead makers made their splendid jewelry in every trading town. But though these Vikings became infamous as fierce warriors and brutal raiders, they were also accomplished traders who established trade routes all over the world.
They formed settlements, founded towns and cities Dublin, for example and left a lasting impact on the local languages and cultures of the places where they landed their ships. While earlier historical research about the Vikings had theorized that the seafaring Norsemen traveled in male-only groups—perhaps due to a lack of desirable mates in Scandinavia—a more recent study tells a very different story.
Like many traditional civilizations, Viking Age society at home and abroad was essentially male-dominated.
The majority of Viking burials found by archaeologists reflect these traditional gender roles: Men were generally buried with their weapons and tools, and women with household items, needlework and jewelry. But women in Viking Age Scandinavia did enjoy an unusual degree of freedom for their day. From award-winning museums and architectural masterpieces to renowned food, film and music festivals.
